Isn’t it a terrible and fragile feeling when you just capture a picture of your past but before you could close it in your heart it fades out and you just can’t grab it, just to hold a little longer?
While your entire mind collapsing around you - as you try to cling in those fragile images - just to remember.. something. To know that you once were someone.
Illustration on Unegen’s background and how heavily it affects him that he can not remember the past, and without his roots he has issues to build a future and live a present.

Beautiful work, I really love the play of the colors, going from shining red to rose red. And the fact that the character seems to fall apart somehow, just like the stone behind him, is a good way to show the title.
So present also how broken this one already is - not only fading from the grasp but also breaking into shards - the present of the shattered mind. The character himself went through a really traumatic past - his mind trying to shelter him from collapsing by locking out the details.
He desperately wish to catch it, to know it - but his own mind working against this - a paradox which is like a snake biting its own tail. If he remembers, that might break him, but as everything is blank, all he knows he lost his past and without it he is Nothing.
Thank you very much for your input and words, much appreciated, and means a lot to me to see how this work talked to others, what story they could read from it
Yes, I guess I know what you mean with the mind blocking bad memories, to keep you from harm. Well what do you do, when all of your memories are like that and you don't have anything else to remember?
Not flawless, but for what I wished to achieve is perfect
I've had a small experience of amnesia so this feeling is very relatable.
The way you describe it reminds me of waking up from a dream, and having the memory slips through your fingers as reach for it. And once you are fully awake the dream is forever forgotten.
I personally also have a period from my past which still covered in mist and can't recall (but have prof it actually happened) so I had an idea how it could feel and what mood could re-awoke this feeling through my arts.
The example you bring is what I was aiming for exactly, I still adore surrealism and dream visions since they carry lot of symbolism which in 1 image able to tell thousands of stories
